View Full Version : Mickelson gambling story?

Was anyone listening to either ESPN or Fox Sports radio (Not sure which it was)around 11:30-12:00 pacific time today when they were discussing Phil Mickelson's gambling habits?

They made mention of him betting on someone other than himself to win the British and whomever was on the air was saying he couldn't believe the PGA hadn't stepped in a long time ago with Mickelson (when he made his Raven winning Superbowl future bet public knowledge)

The rumor around the PGA is that his Callaway bonus last summer went to settle up with Vegas... and getting that bonus was why he switched clubs just before the Ryder Cup, which was very unusual. Normally club switching is an offseason chore. The other rumor was that SI was set to release a story about Phil's illegitimate child during Master's week but FORD threatened SI with pulling all ad revenue in the future if they ran the story.

Max, why would he have to "settle up" with Vegas? Does this infer that he is betting on credit and not putting his money up at the counter (or having someone do it for him to stay on the D.L.)

Did you hear anything about what i started this thread with?

Illegitimate child??? WTF??? He can't do any better than the hot wife that he has.

Whormoan,

The figure I heard was that he owed around 10 mil in Vegas to various casino's. Apparently he discovered Baccarat awhile back. I haven't heard anything about the Tour stepping in and telling him to tone it down. Most anyone that has his type of money plays on credit vs cash. It's the same thing that happened to Daly a few years back. Casino's are all too happy to have celebs gamble in their places and if a man is worth a few million he's going to get large credit lines at multiple places. Daly owed millions up and down the Mississippi before he ever got in trouble in Vegas.

Anyone that's surprised that he has a gambling problem is naive. Anyone that puts 60,000 on a football futures bet has got issues.

Illini,

Really? Wow. My impression was that he had this great life, wealth, hot wife, good family life, and golf was just a small piece of the pie. And I also had the impression that he was a pretty good sportsbettor, and made a lot of money at it.

I don't see him selling his house or car or going bankrupt. When you've got tens (or hundreds) of millions of dollars then gambling 60k on a futures bet is nothing. Pete Rose and Michael Jordan are well-known gamblers and they're both doing just fine. Besides, I'll bet that plenty of athletes and celebrities have a habit of losing large in Vegas; casinos don't spend the money to fly them into town in Lear Jets just so they can break even.

I would like to see Phil post here.

Barry Alvarez plays $500 per hand BJ and Wisconsin promoted him to AD/Head Coach. Emmitt Smith also has been known to play a few dollars at the tables.

I would pay $$$ to have Alvarez post his Big Ten football plays.

Phil is a well known, big time, credit player.

He is also a well known STIFF.

His modus operandi is to offer around 30-40 cents on the dollar....take it or leave it.

And that is ALL I will say about it.

i dont buy any of this.

i heard the futures bet on the ravens was a group of players that pooled some money.

if all this were true their isnt a magazine or radio show that would give 2 shits about ad revenue.

the story would make them money to run.

How people can post some of the crap they do is beyond me. The "I have heard" or "rumor has it" lines are the oldest and most telling way to find out who has a lonely and pathetic existence.

The funniest ones are those that try to insinuate that they have first hand knowledge of information that others don't. wink wink.

What a joke you guys are, I love reading this forum and learning things about gambling. Could do without the Desperate Housewifes crap!

Exactly, that nonsense being posted by Maxdemo and to a lesser extent other is laughable and ridiculous.

heres some gossip I am thinking more and more is true......

Tiger Woods had/has a reputation for being driven and focused to the point of being unfriendly to those around him. Mickelson has the reputation of the gregarois good guy making him a fan favorite. Regular guys like that hes known to bet ( just like they do) and he smiles real nice and comes across like a good guy in interviews on TV.

Behind the scenes among PGA tour pros however, Woods is respected in the clubhouse by his peers. He may not be Mr. Personality, but he is respected for his achievments and is curtious to others and is not at all a bad guy. Nobody has problems with him.

Mickelson however is pretty universally disliked by his peers. Hes arrogant and pissy towards others and isnt great to be around.

Mr. Smith

If you want a blast from the past, same goes for Lee Trevino as Mickelson. The " Merry Mex" was anything but when the cameras were not on him.

Brock....Pinny does offer forms of credit ie you put up a certain ammount to start and each week you'll have the same line of credit...even if you lost the previous week...you just have to settle the amount in a reasonable amount of time......Gives you a little more flexablility

Royal,

If you'll notice I said 'the rumor is' , I didn't state it as fact. I have friends on and around the Tour that I heard this from. Also, Phil wouldn't be the first to have a child out of wedlock and have a squeaky clean image. I believe Dr J had a child show up after his career was over. And how many people thought Daly could be so in debt to the casino's when he was making millions? If you don't believe it, who cares? Be assured I could care less if you believe it or not. Hell, I could care less if it's true or not. Phil's life doesn't affect me one way or the other just as your opinion's don't.

Mr Smith and Joe are also correct about Trevino's personality away from the course. Most of the public just sees the personna but don't really know the person out of the public eye.

Mr. Smith
07-18-2005, 12:05 PM
just to clarify, Trevino is night and day, day being on camera, night being off. A real jerk when off-stage.

I am not saying Mickelson is that bad, just that his " good guy" image is not shared by his peers. They don't like him for the reasons I said.

I had a hard time believing Woods is liked a lot better than Mickelson at first, but now I do believe its true.

I think Woods has matured quite a bit in the past 2-3 years. Mickelson is arrogant and a little sour when hes not smiling for the camera.

Woods has definitely matured, but then again, he could only get more mature from where he was. I remember an SI article about 9 years ago (when Woods was 21) where the writer painted Woods as a pervert who would only talk about sex and dirty jokes, and nothing about golf.

Then again, he was 21 at the time. Who can't relate to that?

By the way, I do remember Mickelson having bet and won huge sums of money on the championship Ravens team and the champ D-Backs team. Both were relatively large long shots. If these are the winning bets we're hearing about from Mickelson, imagine how many of the losing bets we haven't heard about.

Has he washed the Jacket yet ?

Phil Mickelson's Green Jacket Starting To Reek; Wife Begs Him To Take It Off
Originally posted 4/26/2004

SAN DIEGO - Amy Mickelson, wife of 2004 Masters champion Phil Mickelson, begged her husband recently to take off the green jacket he received for winning The Masters over two weeks ago. Phil Mickelson has made several appearances on television and in person wearing the jacket -- one of golf's most coveted and prestigious symbols -- and has yet to take it off since it was presented to him at the Augusta National Golf Club by 2003 Masters winner Mike Weir.

"It's been such a long road for Phil to finally win a major," Amy Mickelson told friend and neighbor Juliet Wilcox this week, "so of course we're thrilled for him. But he's been wearing that jacket for two weeks, and he hasn't taken it off. It's getting a little bit ripe."

"It's understandable what Phil's going through, to a certain degree," said three-time Masters champion Tiger Woods. "When I won my first green jacket in '97, I slept with it on the first night. Two weeks is a little extreme, though. It's got to be pretty well pitted out by now."

"I tell you," Mickelson said Monday morning after having slept in his green jacket for the fifteenth consecutive night, "this thing still feels as good as it did the minute they put it on me. Amy's been joking about how she's going to leave me if I don't get it dry cleaned pretty soon. Ha. That Amy. What a kidder."

"Oh, believe me," Amy Mickelson said. "I'm not kidding. I can't stand the smell of that thing for much longer. He's played golf seven times with it on since he won it, and it's been hot out. I'm giving him a couple more days, and then I'll have to tell him that it's the jacket or me."
